Reprint of Transparency International's 1999 Corruption
Perceptions and Bribe Payers Indices
I found this interesting -- especially since much of the Crash is known to be caused by corrupt
governments. All of this information was obtained from MyCNN from stories dated October 25
and 26, 1999. The actual listing was relayed from Reuters (dated October 26), and the
commentary was relayed from Business Day (dated October 25). These lists are in order of
increasing measurable problems, and are by no way measures of righteousness. The Corruption
Perception Index is a measure of how much businesses in a nation demand corrupt business
practices to do business. The Bribe Payers Index is a measure of how willing a nation appears to
comply with demands for corrupt business practices.
There was not enough information (from interviews with: executives at major companies,
accountants, binational chambers of commerce, major banks and law firms; in: South Africa,
India, Argentina, Hungary, Morocco, Indonesia, Brazil, Poland, Nigeria, Philippines, Russia,
Columbia, South Korea and Thailand) to rank 80 other countries in the Corruption Perception
Index.
